Syrup filters (cone, flat, prefilters, small presses) for maple sugaring

Filter hot (180-185 F) finished syrup through wool or synthetic (Orlon/polyester) felt with paper or synthetic prefilters on top; stack 2-3 prefilters and peel as they clog; keep several clean filters.

Our pick

Top pick: Bascom 8-qt synthetic cone ($14.75) + Cone Prefilter Paper 12-pack ($16.75); at 50+ taps add the Smoky Lake cone filter tank (from $355)
Budget pick: Maple Tapper 1-qt 3-piece set ($29.97) or Tap My Trees 24x30 flat sheets 2-pack ($10.00) for a first season; The manuals' method (felt + stacked prefilters, hot-water care) is satisfied by the dealer cone at the lowest cost per quart of capacity; the Amazon Liberty cone is the same class at ~2x and sits in Amazon's 1% Grocery category.; What would change it: Selling in glass at 50-200 taps points to a small filter press (Smoky Lake 6-plate; price unknown this session).

What matters

How to judge syrup filters (cone, flat, prefilters, small presses)

Each criterion names the extension or manual source it comes from; 'synthesis' marks our own reasoning.

1
Filter hot (180-185 F) finished syrup through wool or synthetic (Orlon/polyester) felt with paper or synthetic prefilters on top; stack 2-3 prefilters and peel as they clog; keep several clean filters.
NAMSPM2 p.158; UMN; CORNELL-NB p.102; UNH · verified
2
Wool filters faster/slower trade-off: dealer text says wool filters better but slower than synthetic (PRACTITIONER); synthetic is cheaper and dries faster.
Bascom wool filter page · practitioner
3
Wash with hot water only - no detergent, bleach or scented products; never wring; store dry away from odors; wash new filters before first use.
NAMSPM2 p.159; CORNELL-NB p.102; UMAINE-7036 · verified
4
Very small batches: filters absorb a lot of syrup; settling and decanting/siphoning is an extension-accepted alternative.
UNH; UMAINE-7036 · verified
5
Filter press (plate or canister) with food-grade DE for 'polished' syrup and glass packaging - commercial standard, 50+ taps if selling in glass.
NAMSPM2 p.159-161; UMAINE-7040; CORNELL-NB p.102 · verified
